Sheena Bora was born to Pori Bora aka Indrani Mukerjea and her partner Siddhartha Das in 1987 in Shillong, Meghalaya. Her mother left Sheena and her brother with her maternal grandparents and moved to Kolkata. In Kolkata, she married Sanjeev Khanna and gave birth to a girl child. They divorced in 2002.

Indrani, after her divorce moved to Mumbai and married Peter Mukerjea, who was the CEO of Star India in the year 2002. Peter Mukerjea already had two sons, Rahul and Rabin from his previous marriage. After marriage, the couple lived together with Indrani’s daughter from previous husband in Mumbai.

In 2005, Indrani Mukerjea introduced her children from a previous relationship, Sheena Bora and her brother to Peter as her younger siblings. In 2006, Sheena Bora moved in with them and enrolled in St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. In 2009, she joined Reliance Infrastructure as a management trainee. In June 2011, Sheena joined Mumbai Metro One as an Assistant manager. During her days in Mumbai, Sheena Bora fell in love with Rahul Mukerjea, son of Peter Mukerjea with his first wife.

On 24 April 2012, Sheena sent her written resignation. On the same day, Rahul also received a message on his phone for a breakup from her. When Rahul enquired about her from Indrani Mukerjea, she told that Sheena has gone to the United States of America for further studies, due to which a FIR was never filed. That was the last day when she was seen.

In June 2015, Rakesh Maria, Police Commissioner of Mumbai got an unknown call stating that Sheena Bora was killed by her sister Indrani Mukerjea and other famous personalities were also involved in that case.

After that call, the Police Commissioner in Khar Police Station inquired if there was anyone named “Sheena Bora” missing, three years ago. On enquiring he found that there was no FIR registered.

Since, the case involved personalities like Peter Mukerjea, so the commissioner required evidence. He then appointed Dinesh Kadam to unofficially enquire on the case. Dinesh Kadam then found that there was a driver, named Shyamvar Pinturam Rai, who worked for Indrani three years ago but now he has left the job. Then on further enquiry it was found that he had weapons with him, so on 21 August 2015, he was arrested for possession of illegal weapons.

During interrogation he revealed about Sheena Bora. He confessed that, on 24th April 2012, Sheena Bora was killed. He said that Indrani called Sheena Bora to Bandra, for some discussion and made her sit in the car where she and her ex- husband Sanjeev Khanna mixed some intoxicants in the water to make her faint.

On fainting, they made her sit between Indrani and Sanjeev and took the car to an isolated place. There, they killed her by strangling her. They then took the car to Peter Mukerjea’s house and kept her there until dark. After it was dark, they took the car to Raigad forest, which is approximately 103 kilometers away from Mumbai and burned her body. They then collected the remains of the body and buried it.

After the confession of Shyamvar Pinturam Rai, the police checked their mobile location on that date and found out that they were all together on that day in different places. On that basis, Indrani Mukerjea was arrested on 25 August, 2015 by Mumbai Police accusing her of murdering Sheena.

Indrani was charged under sections 302 (murder), 201 (disposing evidence or giving false statements), 363 (kidnapping) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code. On 26 August 2015, Indrani's ex-husband Sanjeev was also arrested in Kolkata and charged under sections 364 (kidnapping), 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) and 120-B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code in the same case. Sanjeev allegedly confessed to the offenses charged.

On interrogation, it was found that Indrani was unhappy with Sheena’s relationship with Rahul Mukerjea. Indrani thought that if Sheena marries Rahul, then Peter’s property will go to Rahul and Sheena. She wanted the property for herself and her other daughter with Sanjeev Khanna. This was the motive why Sanjeev also joined her in this conspiracy, because ultimately the property will go to his daughter only.

The case is notable for the involvement of high-profile individuals and the complexity of the investigation. During the course of the investigation Peter Mukerjea also claimed that he did not know that Sheena was the daughter of Indrani Mukerjea. He came to know this after the arrest of Indrani.

Siddhartha Das (father of Sheena Bora) also said that Indrani should be punished if she has killed their daughter. He also added that Indrani always wanted to improve her social class because of which she left him. Siddhartha’s present wife said that she did not knew anything about his previous relationships.

The case was initially investigated by the Mumbai Police, but was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The investigation was complex and involved the examination of a large number of witnesses and evidence, including forensic evidence and mobile phone records.

The trial in the case began in 2016 and concluded in November 2018, with the special CBI court finding Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna, and Shyamvar Rai guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The Sheena Bora murder case has received extensive media coverage and has been described as one of the most high-profile criminal cases in India in recent years. The case has also raised several legal and societal issues, such as the role of media in criminal cases and the need for reforms in the criminal justice system. The Sheena Bora murder case is a tragic reminder of the heinous crime of murder and the impact it has on the victims and their families.
