The Rise of Veganism: Why people are choosing plant base lifestyle?

People in today’s world, if truth be told, are concerned about their physical health. Their to-do list for the entire day, for a health conscious person, should have ticks in all the boxes starting from yoga through the office to having a light dinner at night. Starting their day with yoga followed by meditation, then having a super healthy-low calorie breakfast, drinking the right amount of water to keep themselves hydrated all over the day, then intaking a heavy lunch which should not contain much calories but fibers and should must not contain much fat and then grabbing a digestion-friendly dinner and hence the health check for the day is done.

These habits were engineered on a more frequent basis when the "GO VEGAN” movement became a huge source of energy for the health freaks and the people who prefer health more than anything else. Now one must be wondering what does this "Go Vegan” movement mean?

Well, it has its association with the term ‘Veganism’. The term Veganism is a philosophy that tries to eliminate the unnecessary suffering of all sentient creatures. It is practiced as a diet and lifestyle in which individuals choose not to consume or use animal products. It might also be categorized as a social movement. Continuing its roots from the very 1944, when the first vegan society of the world was formed, to till today where majority of the people have happily chosen a plant based lifestyle for a better and a healthy living, the GO VEGAN has become a word of the mouth now.

Now, one must be wondering why this sudden change occurred and how did the people accept it? Well observing it on a broader basis, we will realize that it was definitely not a sudden shift, the progress was positive and hence it reached to a much wider acceptance.

Well, the rise of veganism can be pinpointed from several factors:

1) If you want to start with, people are becoming more conscious of the ethical and environmental consequences of animal husbandry. They are worried about animal welfare as well as the negative environmental effects of factory farming, such as deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.

2) Second, a rising corpus of scientific studies demonstrates the health benefits of a plant-based diet. A well-planned vegan diet has been proven in studies to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer.

3) Likewise, the availability and diversity of plant-based dietary alternatives have increased dramatically in recent years. Vegan items are becoming more popular in supermarkets, restaurants, and food firms, making it easier for people to live a plant-based diet.

4) While some vegans advocate for employing restricted diets to lose weight, this may not be the ideal option. Diets that exclude food groups for weight reduction, according to Ginny Messina of TheVeganRD.com, "have more in common with fad diet approaches than with a lifestyle approach that focuses on health and enjoyment."

Messina claims that long-term weight reduction may be a full-time job. People who attempt and fail to lose weight as vegans should have compassion for themselves and not view their failure as a personal failing.

There is no "one and only guaranteed plan for permanent weight loss" that works for everyone, according to Messina and co-authors Carol Adams and Patti Breitman in "Never Too Late to Go Vegan." Instead of focusing on weight loss, they advise people to focus on healthy nutrition. They also add that weight control may be accomplished by lowering total calorie consumption, as well as engaging in activities such as weight training "to build muscle mass" and cardiovascular workouts such as walking, jogging, intense dancing, and riding.

Apart from these causes for the rise of veganism, there are multiple other questions doing its full mode of roller coaster ride in people’s minds.

But a question that will definitely keep on making rounds in the minds of the people is : Is Veganism on the rise?

Well, Veganism's popularity statistics have continuously increased from left to right over the previous several years, whether looking at veganism as a diet and lifestyle, a term, or a developing market trend. While internet statistics on veganism's development is limited, the Guardian believes that there are 79 million vegans worldwide. But according to the latest data by the World Animal Foundation there are almost 88 million Vegans in the world today.

There are several ways to assess the rise of veganism. One method is to check Google Trends to see how popular the word is. The term's popularity has risen since 2004, when data was first made public, and is expected to peak in January 2020. It overtook "beef" as a search phrase for the first time in 2016, and they are now constant rivals for search attention. Veganism eclipsed the term "meat" in popularity in 2016 and has continued to do so ever since.

On Google Trends, the most popular nations for the phrase veganism are primarily Western or in the Global North: the United Kingdom, Iceland, Australia, Mauritius, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, Estonia, the United States, and Sweden.

How rapidly is the train of Veganism approaching?

Another technique to look at the rise of veganism is to track sales of plant-based foods. Plant-based meals are frequently advertised as replacements to traditional meats and animal-based goods. According to the Good Food Institute, plant-based food sales will grow three times faster than overall food sales by 2021. This study includes plant-based food items such as milk, eggs, cheese, meat, yoghurt, butter, and creamer.

Since we have a tendency to support the very American Exceptionalism in every sense we get, what about the Vegan Population in the U.S ?

Veganism is substantially more common in Black, Indigenous, and other People of the Global Majority (BIPGM) populations in the United States than in the overall population. According to the BBC, one in every twelve Black Americans (8%) is a devout vegan or vegetarian. According to Ayse Deniz Kavur, African Americans "are the fastest-growing vegan population in the country". Meanwhile, according to another study, approximately one-third of BIPGM in the United States cut their meat intake in 2019, compared to only one-fifth of white Americans.

Now the ultimate thing comes down to the inspirations for the "Go Vegan Movement". Yes!! We have a lot of inspirations to look up to starting from Bollywood fans to Hollywood groupies.

Bollywood celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Kangana Ranaut, Jacqueline Fernandez, Richa Chadha, Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma all have chosen a super healthy plant-based diet. Even the celebrities have been excellently vocal about their decision to go on a plant based lifestyle and surprisingly the reasons when asked were somewhat the same: To encourage cruelty-free environment , ethical reasons and their personal health reasons.

These prompt answers to all the questions shot at gave the public a whole bunch of reasons to accept a vegan lifestyle. Although there are multiple debated statements that popped up in different manners, nonetheless the “Go Vegan” movement should definitely be called a step worth taking.
